Our Bespoke Window Process

At JJ Group, our bespoke window process ensures that every window we create is crafted with care, precision, and the finest materials, from the initial drawings through to fitting if required. Every window is individually manufactured, never using off-the-shelf designs, ensuring each piece aligns seamlessly with your property and requirements.

The First Steps

The bespoke window process begins with a site visit, where Alan meets the client at their property following initial enquiries by email or phone. These visits are free of charge, with no-obligation estimates provided. We then prepare detailed drawings using either rod drawings in the workshop or AutoCAD, providing clear guidance throughout the build. A cutting list is created, allowing the correct timber to be ordered, and we then machine timber sections from planed timber (PAR) to achieve a smooth, prepared surface ready for joinery.

Measuring

During the next stages of our bespoke window process, we mark out the required joints on the frames, using traditional mortise and tenon joints for strength and durability. We then machine mortises, tenons, mouldings, rebates, and grooves according to the design before dry assembling the frames to check fitting and size, sanding the inner edges, and gluing the frames up for final assembly. The sashes and casements are prepared, marked, machined, dry assembled, and sanded to match the frames, ensuring a perfect fit.

Glass measurements are taken, and we liaise with our glaziers to guarantee accuracy. A first sanding of frames, sashes, and casements is completed before we fit the sashes into the frames, add the hinges, and check for smooth, reliable operation. We then fit ironmongery, which can be supplied by JJ Group or provided by the client.

Painting

As part of the bespoke window process, each window is taken apart for final filling and sanding, then moved into our in-house spray booth for finishing. We apply a misted or base primer, followed by further filling and sanding, before applying a second primer coat and completing additional chalking if required. We then apply the first topcoat, allow it to dry thoroughly, and apply the second topcoat. For windows requiring two colours, we complete each side separately with protective taping to preserve the finish.

Final Stages

Following the painting stage, the window returns to our main workshop, where professional glazing is installed by Wealden Glass. Ironmongery is refitted, and we carry out final checks to ensure each window meets our high standards. Each window is then carefully wrapped, ready for delivery. If fitting is required, JJ Group will transport the window to your property and complete the fitting on-site with the same attention to detail that is present throughout our bespoke window process.

Each window that leaves our workshop is a testament to our craftsmanship, commitment to quality, and the care we put into every stage of the bespoke window process.
