Large Barge Board Replacement

When it comes to heritage and character properties, few jobs are as intricate and demanding as a barge board replacement. The boards not only protect the roofline but also contribute to the architectural character of the building. In listed or period properties, these elements must be replaced with care, precision and respect for the original design.

JJ Group recently completed a substantial barge board replacement project for a customer requiring six large, detailed boards to be removed and replaced: each one complete with drop finials and traditional moulding details.

Like-for-Like in Every Detail

The existing barge boards had suffered from age and weathering, and the client needed a solution that preserved the look of the property without compromising on quality or longevity. Our team began by carefully removing the six original barge boards – a task that’s often easier said than done due to the fixings, fragility of older timber, and the size of the components.

Each new barge board was built using high-quality Sapele hardwood, chosen for its durability and suitability for external joinery. We designed every replacement to match the original as closely as possible, with a flat board base, a bottom edge machined moulding, and a stepped top edge with period-appropriate detail. To complete the look, we also manufactured six new drop finials – one for each barge board.

Every board and finial was double primed with a factory spray finish on all sides, ensuring long-term protection and a perfect base for on-site painting. The boards were so large that we had to temporarily remove the doors of our spray booth just to accommodate them: a challenge, but one we were glad to tackle for the sake of precision.

Structural Repairs Alongside Joinery

The project extended beyond just barge board replacement. While on site, we also stripped out and repaired the top rafters on one of the gables near the chimney. This included machining and priming new hardwood soffits to ensure structural stability and a cohesive finish across all visible roofline elements.

Additionally, we carried out splice repairs to the tops of the outer rafters on four gable ends. These essential repairs help reinforce the long-term durability of the roof structure while preserving the historic appearance of the property.

Logistical Challenges, Delivered with Precision

Fitting large barge boards at height requires not only skill, but also teamwork and a keen eye for detail. With limited space on the scaffolding and heavy materials to manoeuvre, the installation required careful planning and safe, methodical execution.

Despite these challenges, the final result is seamless. Our client now has a full barge board replacement that honours the style of the original home, improves structural integrity, and is ready for finishing on site.
